10/8/08 Truth Prompt #1
The truth of mythology can be many things. The truth of mthology really depends on the people who hear it and believe and don't believe it. I mainly see that truth of mythology was the truth accordingto a certain people. Gods in Greek and Roman history do not seem to be real or the truth to me, but the Romans and Greeks believed that their gods watched over them and made them. I think that truth is just like how george on Seinfield says, "It is not a lie, if you believe it." I think that George makes a good point, because if you really believe something is true in your heart, but it is thought as a lie by other people you still believe that it is the truth. A very long time ago Martin Luther believed that god was a loving god and not a vengefull god and this was thought of as a lie by catholics. Martin Luther did not give up his belief, because he knew his belief was true. When he nail the "96 thesis" to the door of the catholic church it changed the truth of the world that he was living in, because his thesis spoke to and changed people's thought on what God is and what God was like. Just like in Greek and Roman mythology, because their gods were believed true to them, ehich made it the truth in their perspective, but things change all the time and new religions came about and came to the knowledge of the Greeks and Romans and they were probably seen as lies, but they were seen as truth to the civilization that believed they were true. Truth with any kind of mythology or religion mainly is what the beliver thinks is true, becuse if you think and believe that it is the truth, then it is the truth, maybe not to everyone, but it is to you.

In the book the Lord of the Flies by William Golding there are a lot of things about how fear can turn you in to something you are not. Some truths that are explained are that fear can destroy you and eventually something has to go wrong. What I mean about fear can destroy you is that it can make you be on edge and attack everything you see, which happened in the book when Simon was killed by the savage boys. Fear can change people because if someone is fearful they usually start acting on the defensive side because they are ready for another attack from the thing they feared. Some people can go on the offensive from fear like when Jack wanted to hunt and kill the beast. Fear also can tear apart friendships and alliances, like in the book the tribe was torn apart because Jack wanted to gain control and one of his angles for getting people to join him was that he would protect them from the beast.
Another truth is that there will always be some problem that comes up. In the book the beast tore up the friendship in the tribe and drove the kids apart. Before that things were going relatively well. In life there is always a problem that can change the way you feel or complicate a situation. In life there is no such thing as a utopia or perfect place because there will always be a problem that will destroy a society like that.
Fear can destroy friendships and even destroy people like in the case of Piggy and Simon's deaths in Lord of the Flies. In the book it also shows that nothing can be perfect and there will always be problems that need solving. Lord of the Flies teaches us many truths and each one applies to our life and should be taken seriously.
12/13/08 Truth Prompt #3 To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee teaches us the truth of not judging people by their skin color and that justice doesn’t always correspond to truth.First of all, the whole stories talks about the racist problem in a town in Alabama by the name of Maycomb.In the story the black people are treated poorly compared to the white people.There are also certain symbols that represent this in the story like when Jem and Scout make a snowman out of mud, but cover the mud with the little snow they have.The symbol is implying that the people in that town did not want to see a brown snow man; instead they wanted to see a white snowman.Second, in the book there was a trial between a black man who was accused by a white man of raping his daughter.The black man whose name was Tom was defended by Atticus, Jem and Scouts dad, who defended him and proved Tom’s innocence.The verdict of the trial was that Tom was guilty, which was just because Tom was black and nothing else.Before the trial even began a mob of white men tried to kill Tom by lynching him, which was thought to be common and not frowned upon if it was done to a black person, at the time of the story.The only reason that Tom was guilty was because he was black. Truth and justice are two different things in this trial mainly because of the verdict at the trial.The truth in the trial was that Tom was innocent, but the justice was he was guilty and sentenced.The truth in the trial was that he black and the justice was that since he was a black man accused by a white man he was automatically guilty.One more truth that was learned by the trial was that there was no possible way for Tom to win the trial.People were even surprised to see Atticus actually trying to defend Tom because he was black and therefore guilty.The truth that was found out about Maycomb was that, Maycomb thought very low of black people and that the people of Maycomb thought that the white man always wins against the black man. The truths of the story were that truth and justice are different because in the trial the truth pointed to Tom’s innocence, but his justice was being sentenced to jail, and that it is not ok to judge someone by their skin color because in the story it showed the horrible way black people were treated that made it seem like they weren’t equal to white people.The truths of To Kill a Mockingbird teaches great lessons and should be kept in your memory and not forgotten.
4/5/09 Truth Prompt #4 Great Expectations by Charles Dickens shows us the truth in our expectations by showing us the reality of our dreams and how far they can reach. In the story we see how it is easy to get caught up in our expectations and leave everything behind. The truth in our epectations is also that sometimes we are like Pip and fail and sometimes we can succeed, but sometimes we just don't realize how good we have it to begin with. This shows that aspirations are great to have to drive you on and forward, but don't leave everythin behind. Pip had to leave his family to try and become a gentlemen and all it ended him up with was regret. Sometimes people see great expectations in other people meaning that they think that person could go far in life and sometimes that happens and sometimes it doesn't. Another truth of expectations is that they are just pressure. The pressure that is put on you to do well can screw up your whole dream for success because instead of doing it for yourself you are doing for someone else. Another lesson that can be learned from great expectations is that expectations give us something to work for, but we must always want to do the work and want to do the occupation we are striving for. This book also shows us that we shouldn't live through other people like Miss Havisham with Estella. Miss Havisham used Estella to get back at men. but it only back fired because Estella ended up breaking her heart. We all have expectations in life, but we have to know how to make to reach them responsibly with out leaving a part of ourselfs behind.
4/5/09 Truth Prompt #5 Of Mice and Men by Steinbeck shows us many themes, but the most important is the theme of dreams because it shows how everything has to go right for a dream to be successful. If one thing goes wrong when it comes to dreams the dream is over. In the book Lennie, George, and Candy had it all planned out, but after one mistake by Lennie who killed Curley's wife it ruined all the dreams they had about their own farm. This book shows how dreams can keep you motivated and how dreams can be shattered very quickly. The truth in dreams is that they all have this quality. Every person is motivated by a dream, like if you are motivated to do a certain job it keeps you going and working. The dreawm shattering quality also happens to people because if you want to do a certain job and you don't get the right grades your dreams could be shattered right away and it could leave you with nothing to fall back on. George and Lennie worked every day dreaming that one day they would choose when to work and that kept them motivated and making money. The disappointment of their dream being shattered made George and Candy very dippressed. If your dreams are shattered the best thing to do is to pick yourself up and start again because otherwise you will be stuck as a failure. If you actually achieve your dream you will feel accomplished because you know how hard it is to actually achieve your dream. The best truth to come from this story is to never give up because if you stop at a shattered dream you will never be able to pick yourseld up again. There are many truths in this book, but dreams top them all because it shows dreams motivation and how quickly dreams can be shattered.
